The Difference between Search Engine Optimization and SEM?

Search Engine Optimization SEO and SEM are two terms that are normally used about by webmasters. It could seem as if the two terms are used about interchangeably. But is there a difference, and if so, what is it?

In fact, there is a tremendous difference. The term SEO stands for Search Engine Optimization. Search Engine Optimization refers to everything you do to your page to make it more search engine friendly. The term SEM stands for Search Engine Marketing. Search Engine Optimization forms a sort of umbrella term that can refer to anything you do to get your page ranked higher in search engines, from search engine optimization to requesting backlinks.

Difference between Search Engine Optimization SEO or SEM services

It is important to know the difference between the two when you are shopping for Search Engine Optimization SEO or SEM services. If the company does not specify what services it offers as part of its “SEM Package,” then don’t hesitate to ask. And do not hand over any money until you know! Some companies may mean nothing more than submitting your websites URL to a few search engines, and you can do that yourself.

Whenever possible, get a list of specific things the company plans to do to help surfers find your search engine optimized website. Will the company submit your URL to search engines? Get a list of the search engines the company plans to submit it to. (“Yahoo!, Google, and 100’s More!” does not count.) Will they use SEO keywords to optimize your site? Will the company include META and ALT tags.

Whats more valuable Search Engine Optimization SEO or SEM

Ultimately, whether a company uses Search Engine Optimization “SEO” or “SEM” does not matter as much as what services they offer. Ideally, SEM would be more valuable than Search Engine Optimization SEO, because it would include Search Engine Optimization SEO as well as other marketing strategies. But this is not always the case. As we’ve noted before, it can be simply a code for “stick your URL is a few search engines and be done with it.” Look for reputable websites, and ask for specific services they offer. Once you have done your due diligence, you will be able to make a knowledgeable choice between Search Engine Optimization SEO and SEM and know that you truly got the best value for your money.
